Subhash Viman

Artistic Director and Choreographer, Morph Dance Company

I first met Subhash Viman at the Navadisha Conference, where he was performing Morphed as part of the International Dance Festival Birmingham in May 2016. The conversation developed between Samir Bhamra, who was producing Subhash under Phizzical productions and Ginnie over the next six months, to help Subhash set up his new organisation Morph Dance Company.

Fast forward another six months and who could have predicted Samir would be producing and touring a national tour of his production Bring on the Bollywood in association with Belgrade Theatre Coventry and Vivacity Key Theatre, Peterborough from May 6th – August 26th. With no spare capacity for Samir to take on any more projects, Ginnie took on the producing role to fund the final stages of taking the triple bill of works in Game Changer to the world premiere at the Curve Theatre Leicester on October 21st 2017!

Morph Dance Company is inventing and transforming traditions of Indian and contemporary dance in this triple bill, ‘Game Changer’. Subhash Viman Gorania’s ability to combine styles in a liquid way gives his dance an unorthodox and quirky edge. This programme offers three different choreographic footprints informed by two cultures, eclipsed by one man.

THREE

Choreography: TJ Lowe & Subhash Viman Gorania

Three bears witness to the stages of human life from birth to the enlightening freedom of youth and the inevitability of death, supported by Humanhood as artistic mentors.

METAMORPHIC

Choreography: Subhash Viman Gorania & Veena Basavarajaiah

Metamorphic creates a seriously playful work exploring the multiple identities of a modern man, trying to find his way of adopting or adapting to ideologies of nationalism, religion and culture.

FLY FROM

Choreography: Saju Hari

Fly From explores the habits of resistance that linger in mind and body when trying to break free. In times of change and uncertainty, this physical journey grows from animalistic roots to reaching nirvana when challenged by displacement and detachment from within.

In Game Changer you will see Subhash develop his own choreographic style in collaboration with other dancer/ choreographers – so there are three very different approaches to movement and content in this triple bill.  Subhash as a performer brings a surprising range of contemporary movement, including kathak, bharatanatyam, hip hop and bollywood dance styles supported by arresting lighting from Andy Hamer and contemporary composers.  He is a recipient of the dx Choreography Award 2017 which has given him important resources to develop his work in the Patrick Centre and Dx studios.
